How it works

About this calculator

How many hours are between 9 AM and 5 PM? How about from 10:30 PM to 6:15 AM? Our time duration calculator makes it easy. Enter a start time and end time, and we calculate the exact hours, minutes, and total minutes between them. It handles overnight durations (when the end time is earlier than the start) and gives you the result in both decimal hours and hours:minutes format.

The formula, explained simply

We convert both times to total minutes since midnight, then subtract the start from the end. If the result is negative (meaning the end time is on the next day), we add 24 hours (1,440 minutes). The result shows the duration in hours (decimal), hours and minutes separately, and total minutes. Perfect for work shifts, travel time, or any time interval calculation.

When you would use this

Employees track work hours and calculate overtime. Students figure out study session lengths. Travelers calculate flight or road trip durations. Event coordinators plan schedules. Freelancers bill clients by the hour. Anyone managing their time gets precise duration calculations.

Frequently asked questions

Does this handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If your end time is earlier than your start time, we assume the end is on the next day. 10 PM to 6 AM gives you 8 hours.
Can I calculate durations longer than 24 hours?
This calculator is for durations within a single day or overnight. For multi-day durations, use our Date Difference Calculator.
How accurate is this?
Down to the minute. The calculation is mathematically precise — no rounding errors.
What does decimal hours mean?
Decimal hours converts the duration to a decimal number. For example, 1 hour 30 minutes = 1.5 hours. This is commonly used for payroll and billing.
Can I use 12-hour format (AM/PM)?
We use 24-hour format for accuracy. 2:00 PM is 14:00, 11:00 PM is 23:00, etc.
