How it works

About this calculator

Whether you are saving for a vacation, a down payment, an emergency fund, or a big purchase, the hardest part is knowing how long it will take. Our savings goal calculator tells you exactly that. Enter your target amount, what you have saved already, how much you can set aside each month, and the interest rate — we calculate the months and years to reach your goal.

The formula, explained simply

We simulate month by month. Each month, your balance earns interest at the annual rate divided by 12, then your monthly contribution is added. We track the balance and count the months until it reaches your goal. The result shows the total months, broken into years and remaining months, and your final balance (which may slightly exceed the goal due to interest).

When you would use this

First-time homebuyers calculate how long until they have enough for a down payment. Vacation planners set realistic timelines. Freelancers build emergency funds. Students save for tuition. Anyone with a financial goal can break it down into monthly steps and see the finish line clearly.

Frequently asked questions

What if my goal seems too far away?
Try increasing your monthly contribution or adjusting your target. Even small increases can cut months or years off the timeline.
Does the interest rate really matter?
Yes. A high-yield savings account currently offers 4-5%, which accelerates your savings significantly compared to a standard 0.01% account.
What is a good emergency fund target?
Most financial experts recommend 3-6 months of living expenses. Start with 1 month and build from there.
Should I invest my savings goal money?
For short-term goals (under 5 years), a high-yield savings account is safer. For longer goals, investing may offer better returns.
What if I can only save irregular amounts?
Use your average monthly savings as the monthly contribution. The calculator will give you a reasonable estimate.
